Nature Trails near the our Center:
Haverford College – 370 Lancaster Avenue, Haverford, PA 19041-1392
The Haverford College Arboretum’s 2.2-mile Nature Trail roughly follows the perimeter of the 216-acre campus. The trail was established in 1933 by the Campus Club, a group of interested alums and students to showcase the college’s growing collection of trees and shrubs and encourage bird-watching.
Athletic teams soon found the trail an excellent place to train. Today, portions go through the Arboretum’s conifer collection in the 18-acre Pinetum, past athletic fields and summer meadows that support wildlife, and alongside the scenic 3-acre Duck Pond.
The Haverford College Arboretum is open every day of the year (except Commencement Day in May) from dawn to dusk. Please park in the Visitors’ Lot. Free Arboretum guided tours are offered seasonally. Call 610-896-1101 for dates. Group tours by appointment. Fee charged.
Haverford Reserve Trails
The Community Park at Haverford Reserve is Haverford Township’s newest and largest open space recreation area. Within and around the Reserve, there are over five miles of walking trails that you can use from dawn to dusk. In general these trails are in wooded areas and have varying degrees of steepness. Their surface is mostly natural or woodchip mulch.
They are largely walking and jogging trails, although the township Parks and Recreation Department permits off-road bicyclists to use them with due respect and consideration of others on the trail. Please note that some trail stubs (not shown on the map below) lead off to housing areas and are private paths for the residents of the housing developments to access the public trails.
As shown in the right-most photo below, the initial portion of the Southbrook Trail, as far as the Switchback Trail, has a macadam surface.
